Aziza win Crop Over Pic-O-De-Crop Calypso Monarch title

Prime Minister Fruendel Stuart, centre, shares the moment with new calypso Monarch Aziza, right, and others, including Sales and Marketing Manager at McEarneyQuality Inc. (MQI) Margaret Hoyte, second from right, who presented the keys to the car- a Mazda3, and Minister of Culture Stephen Lashley, left.
Aziza is the youngest calypsonian to win the Pic-O-De-Crop Calypso Monarch title and a Mazda 3 motor car among her many titles.

She is the only the second female to win the coveted crown. It was 28 years ago when Queen Rita, won the prestigious competition,  then held at the National Stadium. It is one the main events of the annual Crop Over Festival organised by the National Cultural Foundation (NCF) and this year had the backing of title sponsors McEarneyQuality Inc. (MQI) and Mount Gay.

Aziza was crowned winner of the 2016 Pic-O-De-Crop after performing the songs’ One People One Nation’ and ‘Bring back Respect’,  from a field of ten contestants.

And it was if a call by another Calypsonian, ‘Mr. Blood’,  had been answered, as he had called for a woman to win the title as Barbados celebrates its 50th anniversary of Independence.

Aziza took the title with 114 points,  ahead of second place was Ian ‘Iweb’ Webster with 98 points, and  Mr Blood third who placed third with 88. Chrystal Cummins-Beckles and Donella were tied for fourth place on 84 points each.
