Barbados leads in Kia Archery tournament

Barbados held a slender lead at the end of the first day of competition at the end of the first day of the Kia 2012 Southern Caribbean Archery Championship at the CIBC First Caribbean Sports Club on Saturday.

Barbados had a tally of eight medals, made up of two golds, three silvers and three bronze, compared with seven for second placed Martinique made up of two gold, two silver and three bronze and in second place, while Trinidad and Tobago with four medals were third in the four-nation competition.

Two golds and two silvers made up the Trinidad and Tobago medal count, ahead of Guadeloupe who had two, made up of one gold and one bronze.

In the men’s Recurve shooting at 70m, Barbados’ Dwight Hagley proved to be too much for the opposition and ended the day with 580 points beating Sanjeev Harrinarine of Trinidad and Tobago and Pedro Thomas of Barbados into second third places respectively, while Guadeloupe’s veteran archer Aminata Bory amassed a total of 482 points. Charlene Goddard and Judith Magras finished second and third respectively.

Trinidad and Tobago’s Nikhil Kanhai won the men’s junior recurve with 543 points, Martinique dominated the open event with Thealene Cassilde leading the way home with 523 points, while Michael Gooding romped home with 482 points in the Master’s men’s recurve competition.

Martinique won the Men’s Compound competition with Fabien Clombe picking 674 points, while Trinidad and Tobago’s Neela Cezair grabbed both gold and silver medals in the women’s section with 623 points.

A total of 30 archers from the four countries are taking part in the competition. The tournament ends today.
