Ford Focus pair well placed in Sol Rally Barbados

The pair of Paul ‘the Surfer’ Bourne and co-driver Megan Bryant in the Chefette/LIME/Slam 101/MQI/Banks/Castrol Ford Focus WRC07.

The Barbadian pair of Paul ‘the Surfer’ Bourne and co-driver Megan Bryant fought their way through a star-studded field to be in third place at the end of the first day (June 9) of Sol Rally Barbados organised by the Barbados Rally Club’s (BRC).

After being slapped with a starting grid penalty and placed at #19, Bourne and Bryant in the Chefette/LIME/Slam 101/MQI/Banks/Castrol Ford Focus WRC07 went to the overnight halt in third place with a total elapsed time of 28 minutes 29.05 seconds, behind leader Sean Gill and Michael ‘Zippy’ Cummins in a Suzuki SX4 WRC whose time was 28 minutes 21.7 seconds and in a good position to challenge for the top spot when the action resumes tomorrow.

England’s Paul Bird and Scotish co-driver Kirsty Riddick in a Ford Focus WRC with a time of 28 minutes 24.12 seconds were ahead of the Barbadian pair, while another English driver, Steve Perez and Welsh co-driver Paul Spooner in the Kick Energy Drink Ford Focus WRC07 were in fourth place with a time of 28 minutes 35.91 seconds, ahead of the Jamaican pair of Jeff Panton and Mike Fennell (Jr) in a Ford Focus WRC06 who were fifth place with a time of 28 minutes 38.73 seconds.

Barbadian two-wheel drive aces Neil Armstrong and Barry Ward in a Toyota Starlet were the highest placed 2-wheel drive competitors with a time of 29 minutes 25.05 seconds and rounded out the top six.

Organisers cancelled one of the scheduled 12 stages to be decided after an accident, but the annual event which has attracted 101 crews from 15 nations will end when the remaining 10 stages will be decided on Sunday June 10 starting at 9am.
