New Crossover added to BMW family

The all-new BMW X4 Crossover available from local Importer McEnearneyQuality Inc.

BMW rolled out the range-topping version of the X4 crossover, which you may remember as something like an X3 that really wanted to be a coupe. Named obtusely as the X4 M40i, this version is perhaps the closest that BMW's more rakish X3 will get to wearing a genuine M badge.

The X4, available from local dealers McEnearney Quality Inc (MQI), made its North American debut (after its announcement back in October) alongside the M2 at the Detroit auto show, and there's a reason for that: they will both use a 3.0-liter inline-six, good for 355 hp and 343 lb-ft of torque.

That makes the sprint to 60 mph in the X4 M40i a very breezy 4.7 seconds. BMW has modified this engine with forged steel crankshaft, pistons with a modified top ring, as well a high-performance spark plugs and new crankshaft bearings.

BMW has also retuned the suspension in this hot version of the X4, adding adaptive dampers tuned to M performance specs, in addition to giving the front axle increased camber.

In addition to the more powerful version of the inline-six that's in the regular X4, the SUV-coupe will use an eight-speed Steptronic automatic transmission with a manual mode, controllable via paddles, as well as a Launch Control feature -- somewhat of a novelty in this segment.

The X4 has received restyled front and rear fascias, in addition to larger wheels and some other visual tweaks like black chrome tailpipes.

Since this is an X4, all-wheel drive is standard, and so is the automaker's Performance Control system which works to regulate the variable distribution of drive torque between the two rear wheels.
