New Kia Soul to sport a 7-Speed dual-clutch transmission

New 2017 Kia Soul packing 201 hp with a turbocharger.

The Kia Soul is adding a turbo option to its lineup at the LA Auto Show in the form of the Soul Exclaim. The box on wheels gets a 1.6-liter turbo four making 201 hp and 195 lb-ft of torque. It’s also rated at 28 mpg combined, which is actually better than the Soul Plus, which has just 161 hp.

“We wanted to provide loyal Soul lovers and new buyers a sportier option,” said Orth Hedrick, vice president, product planning at Kia Motors America.

The powerplant is connected to a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission and the whole powertrain is eerily familiar -- the same one, but Hyundai-branded, goes in the Veloster Turbo.

Redesigned headlights and fog lights, along with front and rear fascias lend a more aggressive appearance while the availability of two dedicated USB charge ports and an 8-way power passenger seat add convenience and comfort.

The Soul Exclaim comes with 18-inch wheels, special trim, a chrome grille surround and dual chrome twin-tip exhaust.

Inside, Kia goes with a D-shaped leather-wrapped steering wheel, push-button start, a 315-watt stereo with subwoofer and available touchscreen entertainment and navigation.

The new Soul looks a little different from the 2016 model. The wheel choice is better,  and the bumper looks slightly more aggressive with a red accent line around the base of the car.

Kia says the Turbo will go on sale in December.
